“Writing books is just fun! I feel the most myself when I write.”

We had the absolute pleasure of having author Laura Williams visit FHS Regent’s park on Friday the 13th of March as part of our “Women of Influence” series.

Having always enjoyed story-telling and writing at school, Laura decided to pursue a career in writing and follow her dream to become an author. Through years of various part-time jobs and consistent blogging, Laura gained a following and attracted the attention of editors and magazines, and from here began to write articles for companies such as; The Guardian, Buzzfeed, RED, the Telegraph, Stylist and more.

While writing for these well-known papers and having her own column in Grazia, Laura was also a part-time nanny, writing her first novel and continuing to create posts for her blog. When asked what she would change about her job as an author, she said “Pay checks! It’s hard to make writing a full-time job.” Laura highlighted to us that although it may seem that a writer is “successful” and has “made it”, looks can often be deceiving as making a profit from books is very difficult due to the high cost of printing, editing and marketing. However, through all of this, Laura shared that writing is her passion and that we should “trust our joy” because to follow what makes us happy is success in itself.
