On Monday 12th March, the Year 11 cohort attended the FHS Higher Education Evening.

The Library was set aside for our in-house experts throughout the event. Mrs Francisco advised girls on American university applications; Miss Orr guided girls through applying for Art Schools and Foundation courses; Mrs Oakley and Ms Leaf outlined the procedure for Drama School applications. Also based in the Library was Sophie Oulton from Unifrog. All LVI girls will be setting up an account with Unifrog soon, allowing them individually to browse courses, universities, apprenticeships and other higher education information. Mr BossƩ ran a lively and well-attended Careers stall in the Hall during the evening.

The girls were treated to talks about Medical degrees from Professor Sarah Fidler of Imperial. This session was led by Mr Ward, Head of Science, who was accompanied by two former FHS students currently studying Medicine Ā– Sarah Mohammed and Srutti Suresan. Two UVI girls holding Medical offers, Violet Beverley and Shreya Chakraborty lent a hand on the panel to answer questions from LVI girls and parents. In the Lecture Theatre, an Oxbridge talk was chaired by Mr Fillingham and Mr Bryson, our Oxbridge Co-Ordinator. Four girls holding Cambridge offers Ā– Tabby Dickson, Amy Hobson, Helena McBurney and Carin Sarsfield – aided Dr Hazel Collinson from Murray Edwards, Cambridge, discussing the rigours of a competitive application.

Our main speaker in the Hall was Robbie Pickles from Bath University who emphasised the importance of wide research and care in early decision-making about courses and university locations. He reassured the girls that 60% of professions do not require a bespoke degree and emphasised how they should chose subjects about which they are passionate and genuinely interested. The Year 12 girls have started their higher education journeys and are now looking forward to the next event Ā– UCAS Day on Friday 8th June. Many thanks for everyoneĀ’s participation in the Higher Education Evening from speakers, staff and Sixth Form tutors to UVI volunteers and LVI girls who attended.
