The UK Maths Trust organises competitions, challenges, and other enrichment activities for young enthusiastic school-aged mathematicians. An annual challenge takes place that tests pupils mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve carefully thought-out problems.

In preparation for our 90-minute challenge, the Further Maths class spent a lesson on a cross number based on many basic mathematical tools such as prime numbers, multiples, and factors. The task allowed us to think deeper into algorithms that wouldā€™ve been completely hidden. Fibonacci numbers are my pitfall, which were the only questions left to solve! Anticipation rose the night before the challenge and looking at past questions on the site made my interests more exciting.

On Wednesday morning I opened my phone to a teamā€™s message on my class posts from my teacher with the title ā€œSMC TODAY!ā€ and wished us good luck for the big event. The timings of the SMC meant that the Sixth Form had to miss break and start immediately after the second lesson. The hustle and rush into settling down from our last lesson brought a sense of adrenaline in our bodies to start the questions immediately. Everyone was focused on their questions and concentrating hard till the last minute. Many thought that the last couple of questions from all 25 were reasonably hard, however most could power through the beginning. Everyone was curious of their answers the next day.

We are looking forward for the results that will come out soon, and many deserve the relief of knowing how they did.
