The Black History Month theme this year is ‘Proud To Be’ and at FHS we are using this to learn more about Black History.

Our whole school Black History Month assembly aimed to incorporate many stories of Black sporting heroes over the years up until the recent Olympics, looking at symbols of defiance within sports. We also explored the history, importance and influence of Black culture on hair, music and other forms of art. As a school, we wanted to focus on celebrating Black History Month by encouraging students to contribute their own ā€˜Proud To Beā€™ statements as part of the national 2021 campaign, expressing why they feel proud of their Black heritage and culture in their own way and in their own words ā€“ one of which was read out in our assembly.

There have been several activities taking place for everyone to get involved and learn more about the stories and contributions of Black people throughout history up until today. From lectures, workshops and the exploration of post-colonial readings of literature, to break/hip-hop dance sessions and film screenings. In November, we have a visit to the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton and a Q&A with Detective Inspector Bediako about working in the modern slavery and anti-corruption unit in the police force as a black man.

This yearā€™s Black History Month is more important than ever to Francis Holland School. We are celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black people to the UK and around the world, as well as recognising and helping to tackle racism, reclaiming Black History, and ensuring it is represented and celebrated all year round.
