Rt Hon Gisela Stuart: Why we are leaving the EU

Gisela was the Chair of the ‘Vote Leave’ campaign and was Labour MP for Birmingham Edgbaston from 1997 until she stood down in 2017. There has been a continuous unbroken line of women MPs in the constituency since 1953 (the current MP is Preet Kaur Gill, the first female British Sikh MP).

Gisela is now Chair of Change Britain; she believes that economic success is dependent upon a liberal democracy. She reminded us that the EU was set up to reinforce democracy and to provide economic and political stability after World War II. The Sixth Form were very engaged and there was a lively question and answer session, addressing concerns ranging from freedom of movement and job opportunities to the future of Britain outside the EU; tensions between the democratic structures in Europe and problems associated with the single currency.

The Sixth Form enjoyed an opportunity to explore this subject and we are very grateful to Gisela for talking to the Sixth Form. Thank you!
