On Monday 8th March, Dr Smend will talk to us about Stauffenberg’s plot on Hitler, his grandfather’s role in it and the consequences for his family. All parents are invited to attend.

We are delighted to announce that Dr Percy Smend will be speaking online at 6pm on 8th March to discuss his grandfather’s role in the attempt to assassinate Hitler in July 1944 in the Stauffenberg Plot.

Dr Smend originally presented his talk to an audience of Upper Fourth – Sixth Form pupils and staff members at the beginning of this month, and has kindly offered his talk to all FHS alumni and parents who wish to attend.

Dr Smend’s talk was incredibly moving as he detailed the great risk his grandfather took to resist the Nazi regime. On 20 July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Führer of Nazi Germany, inside his Wolf’s Lair field headquarters near Rastenburg, East Prussia.

While the plot ultimately failed to kill Hitler, it nonetheless became a celebrated episode of German resistance during World War II. Dr Smend spoke about his grandparents’ tremendous courage in the face of a hatred regime and left us some thought -provoking questions about standing up to injustice and discrimination.

If you would like to attend Dr Smend’s talk, please email quondam@fhs-nw1.org.uk and the link will be sent to you.
