Upper Fifth are not afraid of a challenge! During lockdown, the Pre A Level Chemists completed the Crest Award.

The Crest Award is the only nationally recognised scheme in the UK for independent project work in Science. Through enquiry-based research, it develops useful skills such as: problem solving, creative thinking, decision making and project management. It is highly regarded by university admissions tutors and future employers because it demonstrates a strong understanding of the scientific method; the qualification certainly makes students stand out from the crowd!

The Upper Fifth focused on four global trends that the Government believe should be at the forefront of our industrial strategy: antimicrobial resistance, active travel, sustainable palm oil production and parkland development.

As well as completing the qualification, thirteen students also achieved Silver awards and one achieved a Bronze award. An honourable mention goes to Parissa and Alysha as their video on Palm Oil almost won a Gold Award. Please watch it here (password: silvercrestvideo)

This is a splendid effort! The Chemistry Department is very proud of all the students who took part and wishes them the very best of luck for their A levels next year. The certificates will be presented in September.
