On Friday, we welcomed Carnegie nominated author K. L. Kettle to talk to our Upper Fourth about building dystopian worlds in young adult fiction. She held a workshop in the Hall at lunchtime and our students enjoyed a talk about how Kettle created the world within her story and the process of taking it from ideas on a page to the final novel.

K. L. Kettle also got the girls thinking about the world from a feminist perspective. She shared her own experiences as a woman in the workplace and how she juggles writing, working in the technology industry and bringing up her twin toddlers!

The girls were invited to discuss the concepts of utopian and dystopian societies, particularly in fiction. They then planned their own ideas about how a dystopian society might look in a story.

Holly Patterson in Upper Fourth told us, ā€˜I found K. L. Kettleā€™s talk inspiring. As someone who is interested in writing, having a different perspective of the publishing world was amazing. The activities we did were fun and I really enjoyed having her at FHS.ā€™
