The Sixth Form Lecture series resumed on Monday 21st January and to start the year off we welcomed Sue Sanders to talk to our girls about LGBT History Month.
Sue is Professor Emeritus at the Harvey Milk Institute and founder of LGBT History Month and The Classroom.
Sue asked our girls about Human Rights, drew parallelisms between the unfair treatment of many minority groups over the course of history and introduced us to many pivotal people in LGBTQ+ history. Our students engaged in a brief research activity and presented some of their findings to the rest of the group. Finally, Sue shared some personal stories about what life was like for a homosexual woman in previous decades and drew our attention to some of the most recent advancements in terms of LGBTQ+ membersĀ rights. She made us aware of the importance of using gender-neutral language and encouraged our students to find out more about LGBT History Month by visiting two very interesting and informative websites: www.LGBThistorymonth.org.uk and www.voicesandvisibility.org.uk
The talk was very engaging and we would like to thank Sue for continuing this conversation at FHS.
