On Wednesday 3rd July, our LIV girls visited the Big Bang Science Fair and held their own fair in our school.

The Big Bang Fair provided lots of workshops and demonstrations for LIV girls to watch and take part in. From making models with Meccano, trying to solve the problem of leaves on the line for Network Rail, building cars powered by balloons or using the STIXX machine to make newspaper rods to create strong structures, there was something for everyone. They also thoroughly enjoyed the shows tantalising entitled: Science of the Future and Sirius Astronomy. The word is that space travel will be much more readily available in the not too distant future.

All the girls then returned to school for their very own Science Fair and the standard was very high indeed. Parents, guests, teachers and girls from other year groups mingled amongst the displays beforehand chatting to the girls about their projects and the areas of personal scientific research they have worked on since the Summer examinations. The nine groups of finalists delivered their presentations to a large audience in the Hall with passion and maturity, demonstrating impressive levels of understanding of some quite complex scientific material. Dr Chloe Tartan, our judge and a graduate of Imperial College, UCL, Oxford and Cambridge universities, had the most difficult task of the evening which was to select the winner. After some deliberation, the winning presentation was: “a glue to stop cancer” by Lola and Ines. Very well done to all the girls in LIV. From the heats to the final itself, it is a tribute to their efforts, knowledge and scientific understanding that they made the decisions so difficult!
