On Saturday 18th November, we were delighted to host our annual German Day for GCSE and A Level students, in collaboration with partner schools, at FHS.

Two of our students have reviewed the day below:

“On Saturday, my fellow German students and I came into Francis Holland at 10am. The day began with eating soft German pretzels before we split off into groups with students from other schools and started to create sketches, with the intent to perform one of the three sketches we wrote later on. The performances were unique but brilliant. My German has definitely improved and it was also fun exploring the language with people who were at my level.”

Isobel Windross, Lower Fifth (Year 10)

“German Day was an enjoyable and insightful experience. Each lecture provided insights into studying German throughout A-level and beyond.Ā Ā We had the privilege of learning from three university professors who covered topics such as the analysis of German film, German history focusing on life in the DDR, and the translation of German literature.

The lectures incorporated interactive elements, allowing us to engage with students from other schools. This provided an opportunity to bond over our shared experiences in taking German A Level and our German language skills, fostering a familiar, warm, and pleasant environment.

Surprisingly, attending school on a Saturday didn’t feel like a chore at all! We were not only entertained but also exposed to an entire realm of German that many of us had never personally experienced before. This truly exemplified the beauty of exploring languages, their creativity, and culture.”

Bon Eve Zeigherman, Lower Sixth (Year 12)

Thank you so much to all who attended and made the day such a success.
