On Thursday 16th March, the Physics and German Departments co-hosted a celebration of Caroline Herschel’s 273rd birthday. Caroline was a German-born British astronomer who made significant contributions to the field of Astronomy, including the discovery of several comets. She was the first woman to receive a salary as a scientist and the first woman in England to hold a government position. What a fantastic woman to celebrate during British Science Week! Thank you so much to our incredibly talented catering manager Roberto Velasio for the beautiful and delicious cake. Ms Watkinson provided us with a superb German hip-hop soundtrack. We also sang happy birthday to Caroline and did a quiz with questions involving Astronomy, Caroline’s life and German language and culture! Wunderbar! Happy 273rd Birthday, Caroline, or Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!
