On Monday 4th October the careers department were pleased to welcome Farrah Storr, editor-in-chief of Elle Magazine, to our first careers event of the year.

Farrah spoke to the girls on her younger self’s aspirations, her path to becoming a high achieving woman in a competitive field, and on her ‘five rules for success.’ As a student Farrah forged her own path and, inspired by a love of English and telling stories, pursued a career in journalism; she has since become one of the most influential women in the fashion industry. Farrah emphasised the importance of pursuing your passions and interests from a young age, and she explained that finding what you enjoy, then working extremely hard in that field is paramount to success. She also emphasised the importance of not only obtaining work experience placements but working hard to excel and stand out in them.

Her inspirational five rules for success inspired us to shirk imposter syndrome and to follow aspirational goals confidently, always working hard along the way. The girls asked pertinent questions, and we were particularly interested to learn that the key job of an editor-in-chief in Paris during fashion week was not just attending shows and elaborate dinners, but forming connections and meeting with advertisers, to constantly renew and promote the magazine. Farrah was an engaging speaker, and the event was extremely well attended.

Thank you to Farrah for her bespoke advice, and to those who attended and asked such insightful questions. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our next ‘In Conversation’ event, which is taking place on 9th November.
