The move from primary to secondary school is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel daunting – for pupils and parents alike. At Francis Holland Regent’s Park, we view this transition as an opportunity to foster independence, build confidence, and strengthen the partnership between home and school.
Over the summer between Year 6 and Year 7, there are many simple ways to prepare:
- Talk openly about the changes ahead – bigger spaces, more homework, new friendships – and the exciting opportunities that come with them.
- Practise the school journey, and if your daughter will be travelling independently, ensure she knows what to do if things go wrong.
- Build independence at home by encouraging her to take responsibility for organising her belongings and routines.
- Discuss mobile phone and internet safety early, using resources such as Childnet, and set clear boundaries around screen use. Whilst a mobile phone provides a layer of safety when travelling to and from school, remember there is nothing wrong with a Nokia brick! Smartphones at a young age are not necessary.
- Help her make social connections by arranging summer meet-ups with classmates.
- Ease back into routines a week before term starts to manage tiredness and ensure a smooth start.
- Stay informed by reading through induction materials together and showing interest in her new environment.
- Read, read and read some more, as well as spending time outside with family and friends.
- And finally, let her fall sometimes – it’s how she’ll learn to get back up.
This transition is just as significant for parents. Senior school marks the beginning of the teenage years – a time of enormous growth, discovery, and opportunity. We invite you to work with us as partners in this next chapter.
Academic success and emotional wellbeing go hand in hand. If anything changes over the summer, please reach out so we can support your daughter from day one.
