The Bursary Fund

We want to be able to welcome many more gifted pupils, regardless of their background. The more widely we can offer an outstanding Francis Holland education for life, the greater the benefit to women, to society at large and to our community.

Here at Francis Holland, Regent’s Park, we are committed to widening access to the outstanding opportunities that our school has to offer for those who might significantly benefit from the experience but may never have been able to consider it. This commitment is reflected through the launch of The Gift Campaign, marking the most audacious fundraising endeavour in the Schoolā€™s history.

There are a number of ways you can support our bursary programme, from sponsoring a bursary for a single student (please see below), toĀ leaving a legacy, to supporting our bursary fund with aĀ singleĀ orĀ small regular gift. Please click here for more information on how to make a gift.

If you have any enquiries about supporting the Bursary Fund please contact the Development Office on 020 7535 2772 or viaĀ email.

ā€œI always took full advantage of the huge range of opportunities that FHS had to offer, and gained valuable skills both in and out of the classroom. My time at FHS shaped my interests, and I was given a level of support I wouldnā€™t have received elsewhere.ā€Ā  Nula, Masterā€™s student at Kings College London and former Bursary Student

In order to realise our ambitious philanthropic vision, we have launched the Gift Campaign.

Our aim is to establish a Ā£5M endowment fund over the course of the next ten years. Raising Ā£500k per annum will enable us to add an additional full-fees award, year on year, to our existing provision. These new awards will run in perpetuity. By 2034, our aspiration is to have welcomed 10 additional full-fees Foundation Scholars to the School.

All gifts made to the Francis Holland, Regentā€™s Park, bursary programme will make a huge difference to our ability to deliver our programme of support. Donations at this level can be pledged in instalments across a number of years.

To recognise significant gifts we are pleased to offer the following opportunities to name a bursary at FHS.

  • By donating the full amount of a Francis Holland Bursary (Year 7 entry), we would be willing to rename it in your honour for seven years. You will also receive anonymised reports on the pupil receiving your bursary twice a year.
  • By donating the full amount of a Sixth Form Bursary (Year 12 entry), we would be willing to rename it in your honour for two years. You will also receive anonymised reports on the pupil receiving your bursary twice a year.

ā€œI am extremely thankful to Francis Holland for the support I received. I would say to anyone considering supporting FHS financially to do so, as their assistance opens up a world of opportunities for young women. Francis Holland creates an environment where girls are able to flourish and grow as individuals, not solely academically but artistically too.ā€

The Governors of the Francis Holland Schools have established a permanent Bursary Fund, to be called the Francis Holland Bursary Fund. The object of this fund is to assist girls from financially-disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from an education at a Francis Holland school by offering support, normally as full or partial fee subsidies, for all or part of their time at the school.

The Francis Holland Bursary Fund operates on essentially the same principles at the Regentā€™s Park and Sloane Square schools, always bearing in mind that awards of bursaries are at the discretion of the Head of each school and reflect their understanding of the needs of their pupils. Each school raises its own bursary funds and the funds are accounted for entirely separately, so that all donations are ring-fenced for the support of girls at the school of the donorā€™s choice.

The Francis Holland Bursary Fund gives support of three kinds:

  • A full fee bursary, awarded at 11+, provides a full subsidy of fees, plus incidentals/extras (such as trips, uniform, learning materials), for seven years. Bursaries are means-tested and awarded on academic performance. These bursaries will be known as Canon Holland Bursaries.
  • A Sixth Form bursary provides a full subsidy of fees for the two years of the sixth form, on the same principles.
  • General financial support at the discretion of the Head of each school. Depending on the sums in the Fund at any time, this might consist of further full fee bursaries, or shorter-term support for families suffering hardship which threatens to make it impossible for girls to continue at the school. This support will normally be given as a fee subsidy for all or part of a year, but could also cover the cost of ad hoc incidental items needed by any particular girl (see above). Initially, the first Ā£50,000 raised for this part of the fund by each school in any one year will be earmarked for shorter-term hardship support as needed.Ā  If a surplus of Ā£150,000 builds up over time, it may be used for full fee bursaries as well.

100% of each gift goes to providing bursarial support. It is Trust policy that girls should not be identified as being in receipt of bursaries during their time at the school. Therefore it may not be possible for a donor to have any contact with the pupil concerned, unless the girl suggests it. However all funders of a Canon Holland Bursary will receive an anonymised report at least once a year on the progress of the girl in question.

Full fee bursaries

Those wishing to support a full fee or sixth form bursary may do so as individuals, or may group together to fund one (for example as a year group). Donations may be by one-off gift or as a series of annual contributions. All such donations will be ring-fenced within the Francis Holland Bursary Fund so that donors can be sure that their support will help one pupil for the duration of the award. If the pupil leaves the school before the termination of the award, then the bursary will be transferred to another girl for the remainder of the term.

The seven-year bursaries will be known by default as Canon Holland Bursaries. If donors wish to honour particular individuals or bodies connected with the school or themselves, they may propose prefixing that name to the award so that, if approved, the bursary might become, for example, the ā€˜Joyce Grenfell Holland Bursaryā€™. Ā Sixth-form bursaries will initially be known by default as Lyall Holland Bursaries (to honour the founderā€™s wife). Again, donors may, subject to school approval, get them renamed.

Separately from this Fund, the Trust has already successfully raised money for a single full fee bursary at Regentā€™s Park named for retired head Vivienne Durham.

General bursary support

Donations for less than Ā£45,000 will be placed in the non-ring-fenced part of the fund and will offer general bursary provision at the discretion of the Head of the school in question, as described above. Donations of any amount are welcomed in support of this goal. Donations raised specifically for bursaries as a result of other Francis Holland School Trust initiatives e.g. the Annual Fund, on-line auctions and designated school fundraising events, will also go into this part of the fund.
