This week, we were delighted to welcome acclaimed fashion designer Sarah Burton OBE, Creative Director at Givenchy, as the guest speaker for our most recent Hale Lecture – an inspiring evening that offered pupils and guests a unique insight into one of the world’s most influential creative careers.
The evening began with two highlight reels showcasing Sarah’s remarkable work in the fashion industry, immediately immersing the audience in the creativity, craftsmanship and innovation that define her designs. These opening moments set the tone for an engaging and candid conversation about her professional journey and the realities of working at the highest level of global fashion.
Sarah reflected on her pathway into the industry, beginning with her studies at Central Saint Martins before joining a small, three-person team at Alexander McQueen. There, she learned her craft under the mentorship of Lee Alexander McQueen himself, gaining invaluable experience that would shape her distinctive creative approach. Among the many milestones discussed was her role in designing Catherine Middleton’s wedding dress – a moment that captured global attention and remains one of the most iconic fashion commissions of recent years.
Now leading the creative vision at Givenchy, Sarah offered fascinating insight into life as a Creative Director. She spoke openly about the challenge of balancing creativity with leadership, explaining that “creating” and “directing” are often difficult roles to combine – from orchestrating international fashion shows to overseeing the finest of details, such as embroidery and sewing.
Our Hale Lectures are pupil led and it was fantastic to hear our pupils pose such intelligent questions with eloquence such as the influence of AI on the creative industry, and how far the industry has come to include women of all shapes and sizes.
We were pleased to welcome over 100 pupils from four local schools to the lecture, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the Hale Lecture and its aim to broaden horizons through access to leading female voices across various industries. Hearing how Sarah progressed from a small design team to guiding the creative direction of a global fashion house provided an inspiring message about perseverance, curiosity and creative ambition.
We are incredibly grateful to Sarah Burton OBE for sharing her time, experience and insight with our school community and we look forward to seeing how her trailblazing career may inspire the next generation of designers, makers and creative thinkers at Francis Holland Regent’s Park and beyond.
