This week, our Lower School pupils enjoyed an inspiring programme of activities as part of Discovery Week, stepping beyond the classroom to explore new places, ideas and cultures through hands-on learning experiences.
Our Lower Fourth geographers spent a fascinating day at Kew Gardens, exploring a range of global ecosystems first-hand. Visits to the iconic Palm House, Princess of Wales Conservatory and Temperate House enabled pupils to compare contrasting climates and discover how plants have adapted to survive in different environments. A particular highlight was the 8-metre-high Treetop Walkway, offering a unique perspective across the gardens while bringing classroom learning vividly to life.
History pupils travelled back in time as they deepened their understanding of the transatlantic slave trade through a study of the life of Olaudah Equiano. Handling artefacts including cotton, cocoa beans, jewellery and sugar cane clippers, alongside analysing primary sources, pupils explored the historical significance and credibility of The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano and its role in the campaign to abolish the slave trade across the British Empire.
Meanwhile, our mathematicians took to Regent’s Park for a mathematical scavenger hunt, applying their problem-solving skills in a real-world setting before visiting Bhaktivedanta Manor and Farm. There, pupils explored Hindu traditions through music, art, dance and worship, as well as trying on traditional dress and learning more about the role of faith, community and culture.
Discovery Week is a valued part of life at Francis Holland Regent’s Park, encouraging pupils to extend their learning beyond the curriculum, develop intellectual curiosity and experience subjects in new and memorable ways. We are grateful to all the staff who made this year’s programme such a success and to our pupils for embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm and curiosity!
