Discovery Week saw our Modern Languages pupils swap the classroom for four vibrant European cities, immersing themselves in the language, culture and traditions of Italy, France, Spain and Germany through a series of unforgettable educational visits.
Our Italian pupils travelled to Florence, where they brought their language learning to life through Italian lessons, pizza-making workshops and, of course, sampling authentic gelato. Visits to the city’s iconic landmarks, including the historic Ponte Vecchio, gave pupils a deeper appreciation of Florence’s rich history and culture.
Meanwhile, our French pupils headed to the beautiful Côte d’Azur, enjoying a packed itinerary in Nice. Alongside French lessons, pupils explored the colourful markets and charming Old Town, visited the Matisse Museum and a local chocolate factory, and discovered the picturesque hilltop village of Èze. Our Sixth Form linguists also benefitted from valuable job-shadowing opportunities, gaining an insight into the world of work while developing their language skills in authentic settings.
In Valencia, our Spanish pupils immersed themselves in Spanish life through language lessons with local teachers, a paella cooking workshop and a guided tour of the city. Visits to the Oceanogràfic, Museo Fallero, Science Museum and Hemisfèric complemented their classroom learning, while a lively flamenco performance, treasure hunt around the Mercat Central and meals at local restaurants provided countless opportunities to practise their Spanish. Throughout the trip, pupils were outstanding ambassadors for the school, embracing every experience with enthusiasm and confidence.
Our German pupils travelled to Berlin, where they explored the city’s remarkable history and culture through visits to landmarks including the Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. German language lessons helped pupils develop their confidence, while activities such as bowling, designing personalised chocolate bars at Ritter Sport and sampling traditional German cuisine ensured there was plenty of fun alongside the learning.
From practising languages with native speakers to experiencing different cultures first-hand, Discovery Week offered our pupils invaluable opportunities to broaden their horizons, build confidence and see the real-world value of language learning. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, independence and curiosity shown by every pupil throughout the week, and grateful to our staff for making these memorable experiences possible.
