On 2 July, our Industrial Cadet Gold Award engineering team officially received their Gold Award badges, recognising the successful completion of their Industrial Cadets Gold project.
We have also recently learned that the team received an additional honour, winning the Best Teamwork Award in recognition of their outstanding collaboration throughout the project.
The students designed and built FIFI (Food In Fridge Inventory), a smart companion for the fridge. Using a Raspberry Pi, barcode scanner and touchscreen, FIFI helps users reduce food waste by prompting them to enter best-before dates when food is added to the fridge. It then highlights which items should be used first and uses AI to generate recipe suggestions based on ingredients that are approaching their expiry date.
The judges were particularly impressed by the team’s collaborative approach, commenting:
“The team’s report and project presentation showed a high level of thought and time had been given to ensure all team members were deeply involved in the project. Drawing on individuals’ skills and strengths to support the delivery of a functioning prototype with real-world relevance.”
This additional award recognises not only the team’s innovative engineering solution but also the exceptional way they worked together, ensuring every member contributed their skills to deliver a practical product with real-world impact.
Congratulations to the entire team on this fantastic achievement. Winning the Industrial Cadets Gold Award is an outstanding accomplishment in itself, and being recognised with the Best Teamwork Award makes their success even more special.
