For our first Hale Lecture of the academic year, we were delighted to welcome back FHRP alumna Angharad Wood, a leading agent for actors and founder of the boutique talent and theatrical agency Tavistock Wood.
Angharad’s mother worked alongside Baroness Hale, the founder of the Hale Lectures here at Francis Holland Regent’s Park, making her return to school especially meaningful. In an engaging panel discussion led by Year 13 students Dori and Holly, both aspiring to careers in the film industry, Angharad offered fascinating insights into the world of talent representation and the evolving landscape of film and television.
After studying Latin and Greek at Cambridge, Angharad began her career as an assistant, determined to “get her foot in the door.” Her perseverance paid off – 20 years after founding Tavistock Wood with just 11 clients, the agency now represents over 200 actors, including some of the most recognisable names in film today. Notably, Angharad spotted Lily James’ potential early in her career, securing her the titular role in the 2015 live adaptation of Cinderella.
She described her work as a balance of glamour and grit – while the job involves travel to global film festivals and working with high-profile clients, it is underpinned by long hours, exceptional organisation, and a deep commitment to her clients’ success. She highlighted time management, communication and people skills as essential attributes for anyone entering the industry, adding that working as an assistant is one of the best ways to learn and network.
Reflecting on her humanities background, Angharad credited it with developing her analytical and critical thinking skills but emphasised that the profession ultimately hinges on connection and character. She also addressed the growing influence of AI in film and television, urging students to celebrate originality and support the art that is great acting.
Eleanor, in the Lower Sixth, introduced Angharad to our audience and had this to say about the lecture: “one piece of information which stood out to me from Angharad Wood’s experience, was the sheer amount of independence needed in the work of an agent, that she had to create an incentive for actors to work in her company specifically. Adding on this, it’s a creative profession, one where you have to stand out, and recognize talent quickly when you spot it. Given that it’s an area I am interested in, I enjoyed hearing about the different traits you have to possess to work in the industry!”
Lizzy, also in the Lower Sixth, said she “learnt that your career doesn’t have to be a set decision when you are younger. It’s ok to change your path later on in life. Success is an objective measure, but ultimately it exists if you love and are passionate about what you do.”
We are incredibly grateful to Angharad for returning to Francis Holland Regent’s Park and inspiring our pupils with her warmth, wisdom, and candour. Her visit was a powerful reminder of where an FHRP education, and a determined spirit, can lead.
